DIY: How to embroider on a Sweatshirt with a flatbed embroidery machine

Embroidery is a great tool for adding details to clothing, new or old; and we are super excited to add embroidery to our business.

We’ve put together a simple DIY on how this sweatshirt was embroidered. You can find the video in our YouTube channel; link below šŸ‘‡

Machine Embroidery

Before you start ensure you have all the equipment/materials  needed.

Materials needed

ā€¢ Embroidery machine

ā€¢ Hoop(4×4 inches) used for this design.
ā€¢ Sweatshirt (BellaCanvas)
ā€¢ Water soluable stabiliser
ā€¢ Cut away stabiliser
ā€¢ Temporary adhesive spray
ā€¢ Brother embroidery threads
ā€¢ Scissors

Step 1

Spray the temporary glue adhesive onto the cut away stabiliser.

Step 2

Turn sweatshirt inside out, place the cut away stabiliser exactly at the points on the shirt where your design will be embroider.

Step 3

Turn the sweatshirt back on the right side, so the stabiliser is on the inside

Step 4

Carefully lift the top layer of  the sweatshirt up, and slide the lower hoop. Be careful not to dislodge the the stabiliser in the area that you want to stitch out your design. Make sure the hoop is straight, place the water soluable stabiliser on top of the shirt (where the stitch will be) now secure the top/inner hoop and tighten the hoop.

Step 5

Carefully slide the hoop with the shirt into the embroidery machine, taking care not to pull the shirt off the hoop. The sweatshirt must be pushed along under the embroidery foot.

Step 6

Choose your embroidery pattern. Use the trace function on your embroidery machine to trace out where the design will be placed and if its the right size.

Step 7

Use the LED embroidery pointer to help you find the correct center position.

Step 8

Lower the machine foot and embroider your pattern, following the steps on your machine’s screen and changing thread colour as required.

Step 9

Once your embroidery is finished, lift up the foot and carefully slide the hoop out of the machine. Guiding the shirt under the embroidery foot.

Step 10

Carefully pull the water soluable stabiliser away from the shirt and cut the cut away stabiliser on the inside of the shirt with a scissors, approx. 0.7mm from the embroidery edge. Be careful not to cut into the T-shirt material or the thread or you’ll make a hole in your garment and also ruin the design!

Step 11

Your embriodered sweatshirt is ready to wear!šŸ’ƒ
