Mug printing is a popular choice for sublimation printing because it’s fairly easy to get it right; you can never have too many mugs! Printed some travl mugs as end of school year gift for some teachers and thought to capture the stages, and also share the quick DIY process.
Supplies used in the video listed below:
Mug press
Travel mug
Heat resistant tape
Sublimation paper – ‘Design printed on’
Butcher paper
Heat resistant glove
Steps:
1. Turn on your Mug Press so it will heat up while you prepare your mug. The press will start beeping when it’s ready to go.
2. Wipe the mug, making sure there are no duct or particles. Any pieces of lint or dust can sublimate onto the mug and leave spots.
It is advised to preheat your blank sublimation mug to ensure heat is within the ceramic before pressing.
3. Trim your design to fit on your mug; then center the design and tape down on the mug, making sure it is straight using heat-resistant tape. Tape on the bottom edge, so the paper does not move while it’s placed in or when released out of the mug press.
4. Wrap your mug with a butcher paper and tape down before pressing in the mug press. This helps protect your mug press from any sublimation ink getting on the press plate itself and then transferring to the next mug you press.
5. Once your mug press is at the required temperature, place your mug and pull down the lever. The Mug Press has a built-in timer, and will beep once the mug is cooked.
6. When it beeps, lift up the lever and carefully pull out the mug. Do not touch the mug itself (heat-resistant gloves are great to protect your hands). Set it down on a heat resistant surface and wait for at least 20 minutes before touching it. Then peel back the tape, butcher paper and transfer and viola your finished mug!
