Adding htv glitter to embroidery creates a sparkly, embroidered applique design.
For this project, i am using a multi needle Brother PR680W, applique font from Artapli and glitter HTV.
Below are detailed steps to follow:
Design and Materials:
- Choose a design: Select an applique design that can be digitized for embroidery.
- Materials: You’ll need your embroidery machine, embroidery thread, cutaway stabilizer, garment of choice and a heat press.
- HTV: Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV) is a great choice for creating a sparkly applique because it can be fused to fabric with a heat press and then embroidered.
Step 1. Preparing the Design:
- Digitize the design: If you don’t have a digitized applique design, you’ll need to digitize your design using embroidery software ( i use embrillance). But for this project, i am using a font purchased from Artapli called Beautyfill.
- Size and placement: Ensure the design is sized appropriately for your project and fits your hoop and determine it placement on the fabric.

Step 2. Embroidering the Applique:
- Hoop the fabric: Mark where you want your design to be placed on the fabric.
- Add a stabiliser on the inside of the fabric, then hoop your fabric.

- Place the hoop in the machine, make sure your design is centered and start stitching.

- This design starts with a placement stitch, this shows where to place the HTV.

- Apply HTV: After the placement stitch is completed, place the glitter HTV (with the carrier sheet removed) adhesive side down in the hoop, aligning it with the placement stitch line. DO NOT UN-HOOP THE FABRIC!

Step 3. Stitching the Applique:
- Tacking Stitch: Use a simple running stitch to tack the glitter material in place, securing it to the garment.
- Finishing Stitch:
Once the glitter material is secured, stitch a finishing stitch (like a satin stitch) around the edges to create a clean finished look to conceal the edges of the glitter material.

- Cut/Rip away excess HTV: Carefully cut or rip away the excess HTV around the stitched outline make sure not to the cut or pull out the stitch.
- Cut away the stabilizer from the back of the design.
Step 4. Heat press: Once the excess htv is removed, (it should look like the below). Place the fabric on the heatpress and press for 160 degrees so the adhesive on the back of the htv can adhere to the fabric.

- Make sure to cover the design with a teflon or parchment paper before pressing to protect your design.

Your embroidery is done ready to wear. Applique embroidery can be used in many different ways, you can add applique design on a baby or adult garment, bags etc.

Enjoy the new technique you’ve learnt!
